that is indeed true. and it is even more true when you are not used to Plan 9.
I was a student in the last gsoc and, even having used Plan 9 for
years when I started, it took me some time until I could actually
produce something.

maybe students should aim at simple and useful projects. fancy stuff
may seem cool to do, but usually are too much trouble for a summer.
