I also find Cantata a strange choice (even though I do use it :) ). Was Clementine-qt5 considered?
I do not think VLC is a suitable replacement for a proper music player. (if we took that claim, we could easily say everything here is irrelevant since the web browser is all the user needs...) As for the browser, while I do agree with Martin regarding the slow Qt security updates, I do not think we should actively discourage their use.
