I addition, GGI & SDL work on non-unix platforms.  Since there are a
multitude of OS's that run on x86, I think that the portability issue is
very important.

As a side note:  Does anybody know what drawing methods (I mean as in
"methodology" and not C++ class structure) that SDL/GGI use on the Win32API
(including DirectX, etc.) platform?
