Sure enough. I was inadvertently using a mix of system (Mac OS X 10.4) tcl (8.4) and MacPorts tcl (8.5). I've remedied the situation by using only the MacPorts one and now things work better for the non- interactive tests. For the interactive tests, I get problems with some of the tk examples. I think it has to do with plbop/pleop vs plinit/plend when using plserver.
