The solution I came up with (commit ID e23628e) turned out to be quite
elegant if I do say so myself. The previous poor workaround (drop
f95, Ada, D, etc., for traditional examples build in the static case)
are now gone, and this new solution passed a test that failed before
that previous poor workaround was implemented.

Of course, all my testing of this new solution is on Linux so I
specifically ask for testing of the traditional build of the
installed examples in the static case for all Windows platforms.

The easiest way to do that, of course, is to run the
comprehensive_test.sh script.

@Arjen: you have kindly been running that script a lot for me recently
with excellent success on Cygwin, but there is a small backlog now
with a number of things to check (my prior build system changes after
your last run of the script, checking the case where you have
installed the addtional software packages I suggested for Cygwin, and
now this change). I suggest you try doing just one comprehensive test
of all changes in the backlog, but if you run into any trouble with
the traditional build you may want to back away from the current
commit and test instead the rest of the backlog for the parent of
e23628e = e23628e^).
