Bit torrent is designed to help distribute files. And it does it pretty well by the sound of things. The fact that it can be used to distribute illegal files as well as legal files is not a problem for bit torrent. It's a problem with the people who are distributing those other files. They need to be educated/punished/frightened into stopping what they're doing. No, it's the key aspects of bittorrent and its comparison to napster that I am referring to.
The shere fact is that its number one purpose was used for distributing
the stuff I mentioned. I wouldn't be making this comparison if I found
even one non illegal file for bittorrent distribution on the two file
lists that I was told to go for for files. In fact when I first read
about bittorrent and how it was designed my initial response WAS a GOOD
response. I was looking forward to using it. It was only after I
started looking for bittorrent files and found nothing but tons and tons
of illegality did I decide, yup, just another napster. I guess the
difference is this is a napster with less features and is less
developed. :D And ultimately is more popular with the technological
highbrow a little more willing to do their own footwork. Maybe I should
have compared it to cocaine house. :D
Fighting against things like bit torrent I think is like arguing that cars should be banned because they make it easy to escape from robberies. Or CD writers should be banned because you can use them to make illegal CD copies as well as legal ones. What percentage of burnt CD's are illegal I wonder?
I know this is the way society is going, and it is the way people like the music industry want it to go, but I for one am sick of being classed as a criminal if I create MP3's, or copy CD's, or run bit torrent/napster/gnutella or whatever. Just because it is possible for me to commit a crime, doesn't mean I am doing it.
So those 98% should be strung up and have their souls damned and their families cursed. But the 2% that are using it legally shouldn't be stopped from using a useful tool just because it can be used to commit a crime. So can hammers and cars. The point of fact is that it doest make a difference how 'legal' that 2% of the bittorrent userbase is. The fact that its being used by 98% of the populace to steal is what makes it comparable to napster. Not whether or not its got a search engine or not.
