There's also the fact that Google Groups does an excellent job archiving newsgroups, and so there would be a reliable third party to maintain the archives in an easily searchable format. Speaking personally, though, as someone who read Usenet for over ten years, I don't read it any more, and I generally expect topic-centered (like this one) to take place on mailing lists or web forums (and I personally vastly prefer mailing lists).
