    That may be your problem. The INSTALL file says run 'autoreconf', not
'autoconf'. I don't know for sure, but, I think 'autoconf' only works on the
current directory and 'autoreconf' works in sub-directories as well. That
would explain why 'configure' isn't finding a 'configure' in the viewer 
directory

> .configure: configuring in viewer
> configure: running /bin/sh ./configure --prefix=/usr/local 
> --cache-file=/dev/null --srcdir=.
> ../configure: ./configure: No such file or directory
> configure: error: /bin/sh ./configure failed for viewer
