yes but on Karmic's defense I was not caught unaware. During the step when I re-used and re-labeled the partitions I can see that the /home partition's format checkbox was checked but not modifiable. I could have halted the installation right there but I don't have important data on my $HOME to warrant doing a separate backup. Except for application settings, I keep all of my data in a separate partition.
