Dick,

   I believe that nss is associated with mozilla-firefox.

   Do you log out when you're done for the day? Assuming that the ubuntus
work similarly to slackware, when I exit the Xfce4 desktop environment the
open applications are firefox, duckduckgo, and 4 urxvt virtual terminals;
occasionly, emacs if I forget to shut it down. Then I log out.

   In the morning I log in (to a console) and start Xfce4. The panel appears
and populates it with the applications that were open when shut down before.
That's because Xfce4 has an option to save the session when it's shut down.
I assume that other desktop environments have the same option hidden
somewhere.

   While I'm logged out the system is still up and running, not shut off, and
only rebooted with a kernel upgrade.
