The problem was with some ancient Hershey-Gothic-English fonts with strange filename extensions. Removed those and mkfontscale completes as do mkfontdir and fc-cache. So, now there are 76 fonts in Type1/, 412 fonts in TTF/, and 274 fonts in OTF/, yet several web sites still do not display text. Please provide suggestions on tests to run or other diagnostics so I can isolate what changed in the past week.
