Like Russell, I also use an Ooma box connected through Ziply. Both are on a dedicated UPS box, and in an extended outage I can recharge the UPS from a 1 kW baby Honda generator. I rarely use phones, but 911 should be callable from every room. I will probably purchase a larger tri-fuel generator (plumbed for natural gas) so I can power server, laptops, refrigerators and furnace blower in an extended outage. When the electric grid grows enough renewable generation, I may replace all the gas appliances with heat pump appliances, backed up by one LARGE emergency generator, also tri-fuel. One semi-deluxe feature of our new natural gas water heater is that it has a built-in mini-generator that powers the thermostats, so it stays online through an electricity outage. When we convert to heat pump, it will be free to a good home. If others are considering generators for similar usage, lets take this discussion off-list. And no, quad-fuel does NOT include penguin feathers. Sorry, Tux. Keith L. -- Keith Lofstrom [email protected]
