as root run this command

telinit 1 

or 

init 1


telinit 3 is used to go back to multi-user mode while on some distro's
telinit 4 goes to gui mode (launch xdm or the likes)

just for reference, here are the various run levels

0       halt system
3       multi user mode
4       gui mode
6       reboot system

0 and 6 are standard although runlevels 3 and 4 may differ from one distro
to another.
