as the lawyers in the impeachment trial are often found saying, the best
proof is the document itself, i.e. read through /etc/inittab for an idea
of what your particular distribution does at the various runlevels. man
init and man inittab provide quite a good introduction to the process.
of course, if you're adventurous and compile a kernel that uses a
different root process (instead of init) all bets are off. ;)
