yes. on linux the swapfile is just for "overflow" or temporary memroy
overcommit, unlike in solaris etc where it's also the tmpfs, etc. lalo na
with kernel 2.4, which is much better at managing swap.
and in any case, at least sa kernel 2.2 and down, pag mabigat na yung
swapping, linux falls to its knees. that's why people say FreeBSD is
better at heavy load -- by heavy load they mean when you're out of
physical memory.
definitely, the "panicky-kill-process technique" that linux uses (at
least, 2.2) under conditions of heavy memory overcommit (basically, the
scheduler kills off random processes to free up memory... i've seen this
in action) is a pathetic hack. so never, never, ever, let your linux box
swap too much. it's a sad spectacle.
of course things daw are really different in 2.4. but my 2.4 boxes haven't
swapped yet.. :)
