Hi! > I have several questions about your actual LTSP setups. > > Do you use OpenOffice for the LTSP workstations? Yes. > What other apps do they use? Everything in my LTSP server except as of the moment are Zapping/XawTV, Xine/MPlayer and Gnomemeeting. Do they browse the internet? Yes. > How many client workstations are attached to the server? In my setup, kunti pa lang kasi sa bahay lang eh. Poor lang ako. =( > Do you use a hub or a switch? I use hub but I recommend a switch. > What speed does your network run? 10base or 100base? If I only open one w/s, I assume it runs on 100Mbps. Actually, I didn't checked it as long as I can use Gnome as my desktop environment and other resource extensive applications that runs simultaneously with a perfect performance. > What are the machine specs of your server (processor, > memory, swap space, hard disk space, etc..). I only have: - Intel Pentium III 800EB Mhz - 512MB SDRAM PC133 - 500MB - 20 GB Seagate 7200 RPM - etc... > What are the machine specs of your clients? Iba-iba sa akin. > Is OpenOffice really slow to use? It takes over a minute to > load OpenOffice in my machine while in KDE 3.0.1 desktop. > Once loaded, OpenOffice's interface feels sluggish and slow, > as responsive as KDE 2.2 before objprelink. Mabagal talaga ang OpenOffice 1.0 ngayon but I don't think it will take you more than a minute to load it. I'm not using KDE anymore in my Mandrake Linux 8.2 system, I'm purely using Gnome-1.4 at kanina madaling araw lang ang "partial" na success ko sa pag-upgrade sa Gnome-2.0. > My machine is a Pentium 733, 128MB RAM, Mandrake 8.2 > 2.4.18-6mdk kernel. Your workstations doesn't need high amount of RAM unless you're running local applications. > These are the reasons why I'm quite unsure in using > OpenOffice at the pilot LTSP we setup in a high school > computer lab. AbiWord is light and fast, but the fonts > look stupid, and the feature-set isn't as extensive > as OpenOffice. Will you still recommend OpenOffice over > AbiWord? Yes, I will. > Is there any maximum limit as to how many OpenOffice > instances are running on the server? Kahit ilang OpenOffices ang i-open mo sa iba't-ibang workstation mo, still it only works as one. Try to check it using "top" or "gtop" utility. > Is the print queue also handled by the server? Are > they responsive to heavy load, like when all clients > are opening at least two or more files per client, and > all of them are printing at the same time? You may want to assign one of your workstations to be the print server or where your printer is attached. > Do you cluster together application servers? Do you > implement openmosix-type clustering on them, or are > they plain LTSP setups? As of now since I don't have enough machines, I'm still using one. But someday, I hope I can play clustered LTSP servers. You probably need a clustered LTSP server if you are connecting 100 or more workstations/machines centralized to it and you have a critical system running to it. But for a workstations of not more than 50, you can just use a dual processor or SMP motherboard. But remember, LTSP is more concerned with the physical memory and not with the processor. > Thanks in advance. I hope you can share much information > about your actual setups.
