I have 10 Windows98 gaming machines connected to a Linux Mandrake 8.1 Samba server on two 8-port 10baseT Cisco 1502 hubs. The gaming machines have TCP/IP (for Counter-Strike), Netbeui and IPX/SPX (for Red Alert and StarCraft) protocols installed. My Mandrake 8.1 is simultaneously used as a dedicated Counter-Strike 1.3 Linux server and Samba server. The gaming machines use a single copy of virtual CD images (Red Alert, Starcraft, & Unreal Tournament) that is shared by the Samba server. While some Win98 clients play networked RA2, StarCraft, or UT games with each other, the other Win98 clients are also busy communicating with the CS 1.3 Linux server via TCP/IP. LAN performance is stable and pretty fast. The only limiting factor with my setup is the overall network speed (10baseT), the "old", stock 8.1 Samba software/Linux kernel in use, AMD-K6-500 server hardware, and that I use hubs instead of a Fast Ethernet switch. I'm still waiting to get my hands on a Fast Ethernet switch before I add more virtual CD images on the server. > manny, since you mentioned that when you disable the linux/router/gateway, > it went back to normal.. im suspecting that either you have a bad nic or > there is a process on your server that is creating a noise which causes for > high bandwidth utilization which degraded the performance of your lan. I've also experienced this. Network performance was slow. I tested each workstation and actually found 2 with defective NICs. Don't know why the NICs went awry, but I've replaced them and the network speed has increased substantially. mikol _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
