Orly and Benj:

Nope, xterm has no effect either.  It's the default terminal when I
first log in.

Maybe this is the culprit:  I'm using screen.  I tried vim without it,
and the backspace key now works!  However, when I'm in the INSERT mode,
I can only delete thru backspace the text that I added at that time and
not anything else.

Anyway, this is still a problem since I plan to use screen while doing
vim.

And thanks again!  I see people here are on overtime, heheh...
