That's strange.  I've already installed RH8.0 last Friday on our i845
box, and as of this moment am configuring stuff in it (www, database,
kernel, firewall...).  I don't seem to encounter any weird problems so
far (except for that d@mn sendmail issue).

Are there any differences between the i845 and i845G chipsets?  I'm not
sure about ours if it's an i845G.  I'll look it up later.  Is there a
way to see what specific chipset I'm using from shell, maybe somewhere
in /proc?

I did encounter a similar problem when I tried installing Linux on an
IBM Thinkpad laptop.  My workaround was to use loadlin, maybe that can
help with your installation as well.
