One should note, of course, that no company is obliged to release its
code as free and open source software. Even the GPL allows you to
extract a fee for the source, although since people can freely
redistribute, seems like nothing's stopping someone from giving your
work away _after_ they've bought it. =)

A hasty generalization, surely. =) Open source programmers are, well,
anyone who steps up to the challenge. I know I have some fairly crufty
code out there, and I'm just a small-time geek. =)

That said, I am _still_ in awe of Richard Stallman, Larry Wall, Linus
Torvalds, Guido... |)

Amen!

I was tickled pink when I got CVS access to my first public
repository. It was, like, a major day in my life. Tremendously
fulfilling peer recognition is - and I'm just small fry compared to
them. =)

I love free and open source. I love being able to work with other
geeks, build on previous work, and make the results available to
everyone for free.

Can't imagine working on commercial software for a company - maybe
open source R&D, but who does that here? <impish grin>
