Thanks Rick, Actually, I am already aware of this :) But then there are multiple fora for Linux newbies all over the place. So why bother with PLUG at all?
The answer to that rhetorical question being, that geography still makes sense for most of us with common concerns. Apparently, the vast majority of the Philippine Linux Newbie subscribers are concerned with server and developer issues. This is a good thing. Sorting through the multitude of postings on developer/server issues and reading the occasional general interest posting is ok with me. I do have the occasional admin type issue that I would like to see answered. In fact I did assist, and was thanked a couple of times on Linux to Mac connectivity problems. But...I use my Linux Box mostly for fun and have a personal interest in making it as user-friendly as possible. The pointy-clicky set who inhabit the Philippines who want to use Linux in a pointy-clicky manner, who are/were Windoze or Mac users used to a pointy- clicky way of doing general things, have no forum to address their needs. These people are generally CLI averse and would like to use an OS in a similar manner to the way they use Windows or Mac OSX, without having to cheat on the license. On the mailing list vs web forum issue, I suppose its a matter of whether one knows how to configure a POP3 mail client or not. I have a friend who I was advising on how to migrate to a POP3 service and Outlook Express (Ok this is windoze) instead of Yahoo. Her first objection "why should I do this when I can just use regular (Web based) mail?" So I guess it boils down to preferring whatever it is you learned first. (By the way, she is now happily using Outlook as a POP3 client.) I'm glad many people are taking time to comment on this. Again I must ask the question: Are there any subscribers to the philmug-newbie list who would prefer a new forum that tackles non sysadmin/developer concerns but looks at the Philippine Linux Scene more from a General User perspective?
