dude that used to be true years ago but these
days people are just inserting cheap firewalls
at home.  I've set custom 486/586 home wireless 
routers for 2 friends
but no longer do it.  my reasons are:

1 - (near) zero maintenance--no os to install,
    patch, etc.
2 - electrical consumption---
    a 486/586 machine consumes what, maybe 30 watts
    continuous (on a low end machine) and will cost maybe 
    $2 or or more to run a 
    month...hardware home routers just uses 
    dc adaptors and should cost cents to run.  
    This alone is reason enough to just get a inexpensive
    firewall.
