Ok... and the question is did its bundling of IE with Windows constitute
a monopolistic practice or was it part of the natural process of adding
value to its product?

I think the courts have decided Andy. That's why M$ had to unbundle IE.

Guess what? They never really complied with that. They just put in options for OEMs to hide the icon or replace the IE skin/branding. All the dlls and other stuff that are needed to run IE come with every version of Windows for the desktop. There were successful (and now, in retrospect, quite funny) attempts to prove that one can remove the IE dlls and still run Windows (this was for 95/98).

But afaik, in Win ME, 2K and XP, for better or worse, the IE object code is
an integral part of Windows and removing them will totally screw things up
- ask any Windows developer.

If you can show me how to easily remove IE from Windows XP and keep the
rest of the OS working, I'd be *REALLY* interested in hearing about it.

M$ did more than just bundle it. They made it an integral part of Windows. That's why it was a monopolistic practice. M$ saw further than us alright. They saw it wasa good way to stick it to their competitors!

ROTFL... you're buying Netscape's story hook, line and sinker! Opera seems to survive pretty well selling their browser - even with IE being an "integral part of Windows".

M$ has been using unfair monopolitiswc practices for quite a while. That's why the EU fined them. Perhaps you haven't been keeping up with the news. That for most rational people is reasonable cause not to trust M$.

Guess what, I don't 'trust' M$ either... but that is not a real reason for me to not use their open source code if I find it useful and see that the license is acceptable.

If, for example, M$ releases code under a BSD-style license, are you saying
that you would not 'trust' them to uphold that license?

Anyway, I believe I've made my points clear and see no need to extend this
off-topic thread further.
