Actually it does not consume 20GB of virtual memory, it would only consume
arounf
5 to 8GB.  Im using Firebird.

CPU0 states: 98.0% user,  0.0% system,  0.0% nice,  1.0% idle
CPU1 states: 14.0% user,  5.0% system,  0.0% nice, 80.0% idle
Mem:  1545740K av, 1513800K used,   31940K free,       0K shrd,    4772K
buff
Swap: 2506712K av, 1030772K used, 1475940K free                  387708K
cached

what sort of application do you have that consumes 20GB of virtual
memory?!!  :P

i have a couple 2GB boxes here but they never swap horribly (at most 1GB
of swap usage).

you do realize that to get a 16GB (or so) box you need to buy a machine
that supports PAE and can accommodate that much RAM. those are expensive.
or maybe an AMD opteron 64bit.
