Hi Andy,
Anyone here using IBM's JFS, SGI's XFS, or reiserfs in lieu of ext3fs?
Although I am using XFS, Reiserfs and Ext3 filesystems in my production servers, I don't have any benchmarks done personally to compare these 3 wonderful filesystems to backup my claims.
How do the three compare in terms of performance, compatibility and stability? Any reason why we shouldn't chuck ext3fs in favor of one of these more modern filesystems already?
Since i dont have any benchmark, these are just my personal oponions based on personal observations:
1. All three fs are rock solid (xfs, reiserfs and ext3)
2. reiserfs with noatime and notail mount option is the most appropriate fs for systems dealing with small files (example: squid server)
3. XFS is very fast on big files (example: database server)
4. Ext3 is a good choice if youre primary concern is stability. (based on net reviews)
5. All those journalizing fs are bad choice if you need some undelete feature.
regards, Kenneth Oncinian
