You could always try one over the other, and see which fits you. :D In
my experience, I went straight to apt-get -y emacs21, read the docs,
tweaked a nice .emacs, and edited. Soon after that came Gnus, BBDB, ERC,
and now, PlannerMode. I find it most refreshing, since just as you think
you know all that you need to know about using Emacs, when another
useful extension comes out of the blue and pleasantly surprises you. :D

With that in place, I never really got to trying XEmacs, though I think
working in it wouldn't be as different.

At any rate, it's good to see another person giving a chance to
emacs... I hope you have a heaven of a time living in it!
