I don't think it is "one size fits all," it is "your size fits you." Nobody presses you to try emacs (or vi or vbs.net) and live in it. "To live in $VISUAL" is your choice, not anyone else's. I chose to work in, out, and with Emacs. I don't regret it. The fact that a certain Emacs can do many more things than just being an editor, that it has a full-fledged programming language (not a MERE extension language,) and that it enjoys the support and appreciation of (E)lispers and macro packagers around the world suggests that Emacs is fun to work in, to work out, and to work with. :D > definitely for editing flat files, i suspect emacs would do better > than VS.NET. but then notepad works just as well (i use notepad when > i'm on windows). i was "touting" VS.NET as an end-to-end development > environment. I try to think of it not as a competition between software systems, but rather as different perspectives of doing things. I too haven't got code folding working. I'm not using it. > of course if you want to do something "weird" that uncle bill and his > minions didn't think of, or that don't fit the windows development > model, you'll be stuck. "Weird" might be what Uncle Bill might call to something that doesn't payout well, or the outcome of his antitrust lawsuits. But of course, I can't speak for his point of view: you have to ask him himself. I have a different perspective altogether, and that's what's important to me. Emacs simply works the way *I want to*. You can give me something else and I'll probably be working *in* it, but could I be working *out* of it, and *with* it? Could I change the way it works to fit my needs, wants, and caprices? If I can't then maybe I'll get stuck, or maybe not. But I won't let myself suffer just because I *can't*. Oh well, that's it. I guess I'll just move along and have a blast learning elisp... -- ZAK B.
