Yes, 8 yrs is about the age of the one I have to pay for the updates too.
The
other one is just a year old but I had one that was about 2-3 years old
(bought
it when I was doing field service in the NW) and it also had the maps for
life.

I guess Garmin just will not change the process for the older units.
