KDE automatically adds an audio volume/mixer to the system tray.  Xfce
does not.

right click on panel
choose panel
add new items
PulseAudio Plugin
Add

Done.

Yes. I discovered that one. And that helps, but does not get me the connection to the buttons. I'll keep searching.
