Their job will be easier if I provide barcodes/ISBNs for the items in each
box.

Keith, et al.:

After trying a USB-connected 1D barcode scanner and not finding the proper
combination of setup codes to scan so the output is a 13-digit ISBN I
returned it to Amazon and replaced it.

The replacement is a wireless/wired NADAMOO unit
<https://www.amazon.com/NADAMOO-Transmission-Automatic-Supermarket-Warehouse/dp/B01GDJ2BH6/ref=sr_1_3?crid=273YFIEVWTYSY&dchild=1&keywords=usb+barcode+reader&qid=1623774068&sprefix=usb+bar+code+%2Caps%2C228&sr=8-3>
which arrived a couple of days ago. I used the included USB cable to charge
the unit overnight.

This morning I inserted the receiver into the desktop; /var/log/messages
sees it as a joystick:
Jun 20 09:36:27 salmo kernel: [6916228.714838] usb 1-11: Product: MM32 Joystick Jun 20 09:36:27 salmo kernel: [6916228.714839] usb 1-11: Manufacturer: MMicroelectronics Jun 20 09:36:27 salmo kernel: [6916228.714839] usb 1-11: SerialNumber: MM3210 Jun 20 09:36:27 salmo kernel: [6916228.732856] input: MMicroelectronics MM32 Joystick as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.3/0000:01:00.0/usb1/1-11/1-11:1.0/0003:0C2E:0901.0007/input/input22

Reading the manual suggested the scanner came paired with the receiver and
was ready to go, so I scanned a couple of books. The output is 13-digit
ISBNs followed by a newline. No muss, no bother. It Just Woiks!

If you have use of a barcode scanner I can recommend this one for ease of
use. It seems to know what barcode scheme it's reading.
