Excellent observation (Ben's, sadly not mine).   All's well
that (eventually) ends well ... I installed Debian/Mate 11
on the 4GB Thinkpad, and there is currently 2.5GB free, so
the same setup should be well behaved on the 3GB Thinkpads.

I will recreate a similar environment to one of my ancient
Scientific Linux 4GB Thinkpads, and see how speed and free
memory compare as I use the machines for my normal workflow.

With one wee advantage for the Debian/Mate machine: it has
a fast terabyte Samsung 870 EVO solid state drive instead
of a terabyte Seagate hard disk.  Much faster, I presume,
though I worry that Linux distros are still adapting to
the idiosyncrasies and differing failure modes of SSD.
