Excellent observation (Ben's, sadly not mine). All's well that (eventually) ends well ... I installed Debian/Mate 11 on the 4GB Thinkpad, and there is currently 2.5GB free, so the same setup should be well behaved on the 3GB Thinkpads. I will recreate a similar environment to one of my ancient Scientific Linux 4GB Thinkpads, and see how speed and free memory compare as I use the machines for my normal workflow. With one wee advantage for the Debian/Mate machine: it has a fast terabyte Samsung 870 EVO solid state drive instead of a terabyte Seagate hard disk. Much faster, I presume, though I worry that Linux distros are still adapting to the idiosyncrasies and differing failure modes of SSD. Thank you everyone for your ideas and experience.
