I had already thought of that, but hadn't yet tried it. So just now I did so, installing 7.0, plus 7.0 guest additions on the host and 7.0 guest additions on the guest, and still nada. But if you notice my reply to wes, I have now successfully logged into one of my two Synology NAS machines, so shared folders are no longer worth wasting more time on. Nevertheless, from now on I'm going to follow your advice and install from Oracle. :)
