Tithing is old testament law. We are not under the law we are under Grace.
The New Testament believer is required to give not Tithe. Tithing was put in place to support the Levites who were the priests and had no land. These estimates were a little bit like doing a survey in Provo, Utah and concluding that Romney would be the next president. The purpose of tithing is to support the goals of the church. The $50m/yr figure you are quoting is related to fast offerings. They are two funds that serve completely different purposes.
