Who said anything about machine specific? I'm looking at the idea of having 25-50 machines, identical hardware, identical software, identical uses. Only difference between them would be 1) hostname, 2) ip and 3) specific SET of data being processed.
When I was in a similar situation I started looking at the Intel NUC's the have built in SSD drives. So I set up kickstart and PXE booting to install the OS on the SSD drive. I know it's not what you are looking for, but it gave systems with no moving parts so it was quiet and cheap.
