I doubt you did something wrong.  I've got a decent i7 paired with a
5400rpm hybrid drive.  KDE5 seems to make lots of small blocking reads
that just makes life miserable until everything is loaded in memory,
especially at login time.  My SSD-based machines don't have that
problem.  No network file protocol does well with small-file workloads. 

I'm curious if the new-ish NFS read cache to local block device would
improve the KDE experience for you.  I've not tried it yet myself.
