I'm running SuSe 9.3 and the patches were initially tested on this
system so I'm surprised.

Is it possible that after compiling Mplayer you didn't install the
newly patched version ? In which case Mplayer.sh is picking up the
original Mplayer and not the patch one.

The Mplayer "-verbose 1" will give more details.  Can you run the
following command from a shell from the directory with the newly built
mplayer and copy the initial startup. You can let it run and if Mplayer
detects problem with R4 stream it will display some message such as
"packets lost".  

./mplayer -verbose 1 -vo null -cache 128 -af
volume=4:sc,resample=44100:0:1
rtsp://rmlivev8bb.bbc.net.uk/farm/*/ev7/live24/radio4/live/r4_dsat_g2.ra

The above command is for latest CVS - there may be some changed from
pre7 e.g. possibly -v 1 not -verbose 1
