Thankyou, the 10.4 now works. The 10.3 on the other hand doesn't, it seems to me the best fix would be to upgrade to 10.4 .
I can't remember where I got the old version of mplayer from, but your instructions are pretty clear, except for the slight anomaly that none of my systems have /usr/local/bin. Anyway it still works if mplayer in in /usr/bin I did find that mplayer didn't work until I had rebooted the mac. I don't know if that's worth putting in the instructions for dolts like me.
