This was with BBC Radio 4 at about midnight (so very off-peak!). As I understand what you said, this is a characteristic of local network servers, and I guess I am therefore stuck with it. So using my digital radio looks like the best bet! Thanks very much for the painstaking diagnostics on this - I'm glad to have a convincing account of the phenomena, even if it's not a fix.
