I haven't had time to look at latest log.

Not possible to have Alsa and pulseaudio installed at the same time. I
think you are seeing the Alsa emulation support for pulse.  Since you
didn't know about "su" I worry whether your skills are good enough to
recover from problem when you start changing default subsystems. 
Replacign pulseaudio is nto a kmnatter of just killing the process pulse
audio - it require stopping, uninstalling pulseaudio and all assoicated
subsystems, rebooting, installing alsa and rebooting again possibly
needing to install other alsa tools and possibly another reboot  - lot
and lots of things can go wrong.

Leave pulseaudio and eventually it'll be working.
