This is of course correct but the SQ is poor by the stream.mp3 route and
UPnP is a dogs dinner (and not a very nice one at that).
I used to use iPeng as the player on my iPhone but controlled it with
Material on same iPhone. 
As far as native players on iOS go iPeng is the best option. There is
nothing wrong with iPeng's control interface it was just that I use
Material everywhere else.
To the OP - stick with your iPeng plan - its only a few £ to activate
player mode.
