That should be fine. It was what I expected you had downloaded and installed, but I felt it was best to start at the beginning.
I can't see why this does not work. You could try the old procedure, of finding the Unix program and copying it to one of the folders where it can live. Search the forums for mplayer and you will find out how to do it (I gave details a few times, though at least one of my posts had wrong information).
