Greg - I am working on another plugin. This one will take an ical file (such as available on Google Calendar) and display the information. The idea is to let you see a list of appointments or any other information that you might want bound by a date/time. There will be configuration items to let you determine the time window for which items are display (e.g., everything today, this week, only current items, etc).
Everything is working pretty well, except that long text doesn't scroll. am using addDisplayItem but it doesn't seem to scroll long text. Are you still supporting the interface?
