Sorry, I thought that this:

meant that it was a reasonable thing to do!

Yes, I have made several attempts at using the ED.  I can get the
Communtity Softsqueeze entry to appear on the list of available
downloads.  I tick this entry and click 'Apply'.  I get an hourglass
for several minutes and when it clears, the Community Softsqueeze entry
has disappeared from the list.  However, no new entry has appeared under
'Extras'.  The Community Softsqueeze entry will only reappear under the
list of available downloads if I Stop and reStart Squeezecenter.
