Any generation is OK as long as you have at least iPhone OS 3.0 running on it, which may be a paid upgrade (5$, I think) on older ones that don't already have it. 3G iTouch will be faster and 2G and 3G have hardware volume keys you can use but apart from that it's the same. I still use 1G iTouches.
