The issue is that finding the server automatically requires UDP
broadcast to work. The way that broadcast works the router would have
to receive and re-send that broadcast, most home routers are simply not
made for that, after all the broadcast would not work over the Internet
anyway.
Routers usually route a message based on the address but the broadcast
doesn't have a dedicated address to route to, it's targeted at all
devices. Which is why it is not supposed to work on the internet or
even behind a router because otherwise you would get really, really
prolific traffic.
