Erland, Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately they did not work. So here is some further information.
WITHOUT MAKING ANY CHANGES TO CUSTOM SCAN. I think that COMPOSERSORT is being scanned by the standard SB scanner as I can see the tag (with correct values) when selecting "+ > more info > view tags" from the Duet Controller. I have tried several different custom menus to display the COMPOSER and none of them pick up the sort using COMPOSERSORT. If I create a menu using one the templates that allows a sort tag to be entered and use COMPOSERSORT the result is the same; sorting is by COMPOSER not COMPOSERSORT. SO THEN I TRIED YOUR SUGGESTIONS. Any other clues as to what I need to do?
