Did a bit more digging this morning. Installed the Spotify plugin and
settings showed the helper as running. Restarted the application then
rebooted the server.

After this the Synology Resource Monitor showed 3 instances of
slimserver.pl adding up to about 90 – 95% of processor. It only shows
10 applications in the list so spotifyd may be there but off the bottom
of the list.

I went to the settings for the plugin and put in the account details,
which appeared to stick.

I then went to the Radio menu and noticed that Spotify was there, but
no other radio services other than BBC iPlayer and the icon to enter a
URL.

Tried using Spotify but encountered the error message:
THERE WAS AN ERROR LOADING THE REMOTE FEED FOR : (CONNECT TIMED OUT:
TRANSPORT ENDPOINT IS NOT CONNECTED)

Tried rebooting the server but the result was the same.

I think this plugin is just a bit much for this NAS. The processor is
only a 400mhz part and it only has 128mb of RAM. This is fine and fast
enough for running the basic NAS functions and SqueezeBox Server in a
basic configuration but clearly the Spotify plugin is just too
demanding of resources in this 2007 vintage NAS.

Interstingly others here have posted that the 2011 version of the two
disk version of this NAS (the DS 211) runs the plugin fine. That has a
1600mhz processor and 256mb RAM and is functionally identical to the one
disk version (DS 111) so I think I might have to start saving for a new
NAS.
