I had similiar problems when I reverted back to 2.0.4. Make sure that the file permissions of your manually installed v2.0.4 plugin are correctly set. In my case, the owner was "root", and I forgot to change it the Squeezebox user. By the way, I also have the "time out" issue with the 2.1.0 version. I'm running the Squeezebox server on a Sheevaplug. According to the log, the Spotify password is set, the helper is running. However, the helper seems to eat all processing power, constantly above 90%. I get time outs when trying to access e.g. Spotify playlists.
