OK, even though I could not reproduce the crash I also found an image where the black bars are added, it's my "huge" image for crash tests, maybe it's too big for the server to handle the "F" mode although it does seem to work for thumbnails. The difference is that thumbnails get requested as 150x150 images while the cover is 768x768 on iPad. Also, thumbnails are "f - fit stretch", maybe that makes a difference.
