Just a short update. I tried the emulator, and that worked, so it was possibly a networking issue, but it is not a bandwidth issue. Long story short I abandoned Ubuntu for openSUSE, unfortunately openSUSE 12.2's perl is too recent for LMS so I run LMS on Ubuntu 10.04 in VirtualBox atm, which seems to work just fine.
